On the Trail of the Arctic Fox Exhibition
Within the canon of Irish history there has been a long and steady tradition of exploration and involvement with the sea. This notable line dates back to the days of Brendan the Navigator and continued up to the 19th and 20th centuries through the efforts of polar explorers Ernest Shackleton, Tom Crean, Francis Crozier and Francis Leopold McClintock.
According to polar historian Frank Nugent there were four streams of Irish involvement in polar exploration.
- To locate a navigable channel linking the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean
- To discover and prove a viable theory for the calculation of magnetic variation to aid in navigation
- To search for the lost Franklin expedition of 1845
- To be the first man to reach the South Poll
This exhibition examines the life and times of Sir Francis Leopold McClintock noting in particular the importance of his greatest contribution to 19th Century Victorian life – discovering the fate of the Franklin expedition.
